Biography

My name is Daniel Thornton and I make music under the name ‘Fifth Botanist’.  Fifth Botanist is a project centered on ambient and minimal music. Fifth Botanist uses a number of tools to make music, including guitars and effects pedals, synthesizers, sequencers, audio plugins, portable digital field recorders, compact cassette recorders, and the occasional drum machine. Compositions are recorded and mixed ‘in the box’ using a computer running Ableton Live. Many of the compositions use field recordings made in nature or at home.

Fifth Botanist’s music focuses on themes such as sense of self and identity, the natural world, and family.
